Waiting

My due date is tomorrow, and with any luck, things will happen almost exactly the way they happened before! I would like to wake up at 3:30 in the morning with contractions, and have them get steadily closer and closer until I know it's time to go to the hospital (maybe a little faster this time. They didn't admit me until 10:30pm on my due date with Gabby) and then have my water break in triage so I don't have to clean it up... get my own room with a really great nurse who helps us through, walks me around, gets me toast with strawberry jam... and then have an epidural when it gets too bad, sleep for an hour, and wake up and push for a bit and have the baby come, all perfect and beautiful. Oh, but maybe without the lousy doctor who disappeared, and then who also stitched me up wrong that got infected. I could do without that :) But seriously. If the baby comes tomorrow, that would be GREAT. Because I'm ready to be done with peeing every hour all through the night, and having this achiness in my hips whenever I lie down from all the weight in my belly, and generally not being able to walk or move quickly because of this huge bulk that I'm hauling around... Plus, I'm excited to see what this new little girl looks like. Will she be fair and blue-eyed like our first? Or olive-skinned and dark like Paul and I are?

Today was a laaaaazy day. Actually, yesterday kind of was, too. As in, way too hot to feel motivated to get anything done, even though the kitchen is a mess and my hospital bags still aren't 100% ready... now that it's dark and cool, I might get one or two things accomplished. We'll see. :)

Today was also lazy because my wonderful MIL just lent me a book called "the Memory Keeper's Daughter" by Kim Edwards, and I can't seem to put it down. I love a good book. The one I just finished was "Nefertiti" by Michelle Moran - the last of her 3 books that I hadn't read yet, and they're all awesome. I really hope she writes more. And before that was "Ever After"? - my 14 year old sister wanted me to read it, and I couldn't put it down until I had finished it that night. Silly Teenage Novels, so addicting :) There have been a few books recently that have bugged me so much that I slammed them shut in frustration - books whose authors have impressed me in the past, but who now just seem so desperate to use all of the vocabulary found in the crossword, and to have attention-grabbing political twists and scandals... maybe it's my prego-brain, but I'm really just content now with a good story, and even some historical lessons thrown in. Forget the glossy smut.

I've gotten phone calls made, errands run, visiting teaching done, turned in my Primary Secretary binder (just in case), and even have a few lasagnas in the deep freeze downstairs... I know my due date isn't until tomorrow, but I really am starting to feel impatient!

Oh, and on a Gabby-note: Paul said that this morning (I was asleep) Gabby came up to him and said "poop!" but there wasn't anything in her diaper, so he didn't think anything of it and she went and played some more. And then a few minutes later, she came back and said "poop!" again, and this time there WAS a special prize in her diaper this time. So we're really starting to wonder about potty training. Probably she's still several months away from any real training, but what has been everybody else's experience, so we can start planning ahead?

We've had a few more stripping incidences in her crib during naptime, but no more Diaper-Off, Poo-Everywhere episodes. As in, she'll have pooped, but left her diaper on. We think that she understands now that painting her crib with poop is a certain death-wish. And we're glad.

But yeah - as far as potty training goes: Do we go with the seat over the toilet? Or do we get her her own little potty? (I cringe from that second idea - the idea of having a toilet that I have to actually clean out every time she uses it just seems so gross...) From what I've heard, having her own little potty to sit on while either Mommy or Daddy sit on the real thing is a good way to give her the general idea... but then how do you go from the little potty to the big potty? But with a seat, is it harder to give her an example, since we wouldn't all be going at the same time? (wow, how's that for TMI?! :)) And also, has everybody else out there used Pull-Ups? And when do you switch? Because it seems like if they're still generally going in their diaper, pull-ups would be annoying to change, as opposed to the diaper with the tabbies... but then, are diapers hard to pull up and down?

Wow :) If you've actually read this far, THANKS! I'm excited to read your comments :)

  1. AWWww Julie... I read your comments on facebook and read your blog and I think...."Man! I am SO glad I am not in her shoes"...hahaha! Sorry to brag! :)

I really do hope that your baby comes soon though! I feel your pain!

Potty training...what a job eh? I am starting in sept to potty train Laila. She is giving all the signs and has even pooped in the toliet once. :) So many questions on what works but really it all depends on Gabby and how she takes it. Do some research on different potty training ways and see which one will work best for you and Gabby. As for buying a little toliet..... SICK!! I am totally against that cause the thought of cleaning it out grosses me out too. I bought a seat that goes on the toliet...so hopefully she will be happy with that. Good luck with potty training when you start that up!!

  2. I bought a little potty for Sam when he first started training - I didn't keep that up for long. A seat on the toilet worked and it was exciting for him to be able to flush after wards. As for pull ups I'm not a fan at all. They feel too similar to a diaper and I never found them helpful. I eventually just let him wear underwear and when it got wet or dirty it was pretty uncomfortable and I think that helped him want to train as well as understand the connection of what his body was doing and the end result. It went a lot more smoothly for Ben when it was his turn without the trial and error of potty's and pull ups. Hope that helps!

  3. Potty training.. I will have to say that alll 6 of mine were different. Ben was amazing and him and Dad did the pee fight thing in the big potty and he used the big potty to go poo to but Josh wouldn't have any of that so we had to get the small one until he felt ready to move up but he trained well on the little one. Sam was a harder train because he was stubborn and we had a lot of accidents on the floor to clean up and that was when we started using pull-up but got the ones that went cold when he went pee because he didn't like feeling cold and he trained faster then. Matt used both the big potty and the little potty. He liked to go pee in the big one and used the little potty as a stool but preferred to use the little one for going poo because even with a little seat he didn't like how high the big potty was to sit on. Tommy didn't train until after he turned 3 but he had difficulty communicating what he needed to do since he didn't talk still. We had to do the when Dad or Big brothers went to the bathroom they took him and used the example thing so he used the little potty. Claudia trained herself for the most part. She uses which ever she feels like that day because thats the way she is and we have both. She hates using other peoples toilets or going pee in a public place though so we have to talk her into it there. But the point comes down to this.. Every kid was different and you just have to find out what works with them. Try the potty seat at first but be flexable enough to change if she doesn't like it... oh and with the little potty if you put a little water in the bottom of it it is a lot easier to clean. And some of them come with seats that clip on the big potty. I don't recommend the singing ones. We got for Tommy trying to encourage him but after a while the connectors wore down and the thing would go off when ever it felt like it, plus cleaning it was harder. Can't wait to see the pics of this new little one.
